Families register for soccer and plan for best season yet!

Pizza and soccer registration...what a night!

On Tuesday night, over 60 families of Broad Acres students interested in playing on an LBAA soccer team this upcoming Spring soccer season, joined us in the school cafeteria for a night of filling out forms, season planning, connecting with parents and coaches and…of course pizza. We are really interested in trying to create as many avenues as possible for interested parents to get more involved in their childrens’ sports teams, believing this is a wonderful door into our larger network of support and resources.

30 pizzas later...delivered by a parent (manager of Pizza Bolis in Hyattsville) of one of our players

Parents filling out questionnaires and kids hanging

With less than two weeks before games start, families split up according to team and together read through various handouts on league philosophy–emphasizing sportsmanship and learning over winning–and tips on how to be a “great soccer mom or dad.” In addition, parents filled out a two page questionnaire about daily concerns they have (neighborhood safety, employment, health care…etc.) as well as how they’d like to be involved in the teams. We hope that these forms can be the basis of a follow-up conversation held in a bbq setting after games team by team. From a quick scan of the filled out forms what was clear is that parents are extremely interested and willing to play a greater role in supporting their children however possible, despite the many obstacles they face.  Our role is just to make the ‘ask’ for them to be involved in a way that makes sense for them
