What brings you here?

Last night, a group of women gathered in the Essex house on Maple Ave. for an orientation to the English learning circle. From last week’s discussion, Kelemwork, Sandra, Amesale, Tutu, Salomey, and Denise had identified their needs for English. Within the 6 women, there were 6 languages spoken: Spanish, Amharic, Wolof, French, Swahili, and Ewe.
While some participants had identified learning English to get a better job, others wanted to know how to communicate with others and get to know others. The learning circle would provide a safe space for everyone to practice speaking and writing. When Denise acknowledged that she would need a reminder call, Tutu volunteered to remind her about the next session. (About a month ago, Tutu had requested English for her sister. She later admitted that the request was for herself, and started connecting and gathering residents together.)
Together, with Karen from Piney Branch Action Team volunteering to facilitate the circle, and Phyllis swinging by to join us last night, we discussed our ideas to build a thriving space. We want to make sure our circle includes “people not being shy” “space to practice” “smiles” and “lots of learning happens.”
We are meeting again on Thursday! In the meantime, help us get started on our homework and brainstorm ways to provide childcare, food, and books for our meetings.
