Tuesdays Together Recap

Posted by meganmoriarty on June 2, 2010

Last night we had our first Tuesdays Together for what is shaping up to be a busy month of June. We had a good mix of old and new friends, with 15 neighbors joining Julio, Alpha and Gavin in the English class after the welcome circle led by Hector.

As usual, word of mouth brought many of our new participants — Hector met Gregoria at the Manna food truck last week and invited her; Lynn brought her neighbor Mavis; and Rosa got Karla and Saul to come when they came to the Neighborhood Service Center last week.

During the mutual support circle, we experienced the way the Wheaton network is providing “hard value” to its members:

–Lynn shared information about a free computer class running at the church next to her apartment building. Abeebech and others will contact the teacher directly to sign up!

–Rosa signed at least four families up for Manna food. Maria will meet with Milton’s sister today to discuss medical assistance options for his brother who has cancer and connected Karla to the County program that provides a child care subsidy.

–Juana gave Katie the contact information for her grandson who is a mechanic and can help Katie out with an oil change for her car.

–Gregoria learned all she has to do is show up next week for the English class (no registration required!) and got some good leads about summer programs for her teenage son.

–Paulina met Michaela from Identity who will connect her to a social worker to figure out how her son Marvin can take a GED prep class. Marvin got to chat with Alpha who encouraged him to keep pursuing that GED class.

Here’s our plan for the next few weeks: Spirit of Silver Spring on Saturday, door knocking training next week, two weeks of door knocking on Hewitt Avenue in Aspen Hill followed by a Neighbors Exchange on June 24th and, hopefully, a barbeque that weekend.
