Action teams get started!

Posted by katieschmahl on May 18, 2010

In Gaithersburg, at our weekly Thursday night meeting we had a breakthrough!

We finally got together in our action teams to start doing something about the topics we were passionate about.  We had 4 different groups: healthcare, jobs, affordable housing and a community garden. Some people wanted to be in more than one, but we decided to just have these four groups this week and then next week, we can decide if we want to switch groups or stay in the same ones.

Everyone came up with great ideas and next steps!

In the employment group, Hugh, Bill, Orlando and Fabian decided to hold a job fair with employers that give tips to potential employees.

In the  health care group, Kathie and Roberto came up with a timeline of how to best troubleshoot a problem that he had had with Priority Partners.

In the affordable housing group, George, Maricar and Jean Paul came up with some ideas that they wanted to get more information about  such as: rent control, rent subsidies, and fair housing rules in Gaithersburg.

And lastly, in the community garden group, Mustafa and I came up with some questions to ask Tim about plot sizes and security issues, but also came up with some good ideas for advertising the garden to potential gardeners.

Can’t wait to see what everyone’s come up with this week!

Also, during Support Action, Victoria told everyone that she’s starting English classes and wants partners for English conversations and 5 people volunteered to teach her English if she can teach them Spanish! Good luck in your classes Victoria!
