Record breaking numbers came out to our Neighbor Corps retreat this past weekend at the Bishop Claggett Center: 25 participants!!! That’s not even including IMPACT staff and participants’ children! We had an amazing time connecting and building relationships through fun activities like storytelling, using scarves to describe our leadership styles, watching and discussing a movie on race, making a common vision for Gaithersburg, and learning more about ourselves and about what we’re going to be doing as a group for the next 3 months, and enjoying delicious meals together!
At night, we gathered in the basement to play some games and just talk, and play games we did! George, an avid Scrabble player, brought his deluxe edition game and we played two rounds with 4 different teams, using Spanish, French and English words! So we called it Spafrenglish style 🙂 We had a couple “challenges” when JoAnn, Judy, and Sonia doubted George’s use of the word “Xi”, which we all found out is the 14th letter of the Greek alphabet, so they lost their turn. But overall, it was a super fun night! Check out our final Scrabble boards below!
Some of the connections made were between Kim, a neighbor of Tim, and Jean Paul because unbeknownst to them before, they both speak French! Also, Patricia and Kathie connected over personal stories, and Judy got a chance to practice her Spanish with Victoria, Pedro and Laura! Definitely really proud of Victoria, who had been speaking Spanish the whole time, and wasn’t comfortable speaking English in front of the group, stepped out of her comfort zone on Sunday towards the end of the day, and spoke in English!! Another really cool thing was that Betty Lam and JoAnn Barnes came to the retreat just to find out more about Neighbor Corps and by the end, were really committed to the group and want to continue with the program as much as possible!
