A New Energy in Gaithersburg

Posted by Neighborhood Opportunity Network on August 21, 2009

What a month for the Gaithersburg Neighbors Campaign!  After a short hiatus, the Campaign began a whirlwind of activity over the past few weeks.  We’ve reconnected with old friends, made great new friends, and met some of our fantastic neighbors.  There is a palpable energy in Gaithersburg and we hope to carry it forward for the next year.

Sandra and David acting out what appears to be a very successful door knock!

Our kickoff event at Antojitos really got people excited to get out in Gaithersburg and begin meeting their neighbors.  The next weekend, IMPACT arranged for a door knocker training with the City of Gaithersburg.  Unfortunately, only three people from the City were able to attend, but the training was still fantastic.  Some of our experienced door knockers like Ntshiuwa were able to give pointers to the new door knockers, and role playing scenarios gave everyone a sense of how door knocking could be really rewarding.

After the training, a group of 11 of us went door knocking in Crestwood Apartments.  The new door knockers turned out to be experts!  Paula, Margie, Leon, David, and Andrea were amazing at reaching out to neighbors and finding out their stories.  The next day, a smaller group of Kusum, George, Monica, Winta, and Ira went door knocking in the Spring Ridge Apartment complex.  They met neighbors with many of the same concerns and assets as the residents of Crestwood.  The conversations at Spring Ridge were so amazing, that another group of door knockers had to go out the next weekend to finish the complex!

On our way to a door knocking session!

In three days over the span of two weeks, members of the Gaithersburg Neighbors Campaign were able knock on almost every door in two apartment complexes!  Not only did the door knockers meet and help some of their neighbors, but they also formed bonds with each other that will propel the Campaign forward over the coming months.  The door knockers at Crestwood and Spring Ridge left feeling like Gaithersburg was ripe for the kind of investment in community provided by the Neighbors Campaign.  So be on the lookout for plenty more door knocks in Gaithersburg and some Neighbor Exchanges and Neighbor Circles!
