Supporting one another in a time of crisis

Busy days in Silver Spring!

The Neighbors Campaign has been busy this week in the greater Silver Spring area!

After a weekend of door knocking, on Monday night we hosted a Neighbors Exchange at the Wheaton Neighborhood Service Center. Over 30 neighbors from the Glenmont Forest and Oakfield Apartments came to meet each other and get connected to resources.

In the small group discussing jobs, we met a couple that recently moved here from Colombia. The wife is a nurse and was glad to hear about the County’s new program to assist foreign-trained health professionals get certified to work here. They are both excited to join the Campaign and go out door knocking with us so they can share the information they learned with their neighbors.

In another group that discussed access to health care, none of the ten women had seen a gynecologist in the past year so they spent most of the time talking about the services available for them at Planned Parenthood, Mobile Med and Centro de Salud. Amongst themselves they shared why it has been difficult to go in the past – they did not know where to go or why an annual check up was so important to their health.

Thanks to our resource partners from: Health and Human Services, Proyecto Salud, Washington Adventist Hospital, Montgomery Works, Catholic Charities, BB&T Bank and Provident Bank.

And to Ann, Maria and Rosa, three of the Community Connectors that were on hand to personally meet residents, answer their questions about accessing services and debunk myths about services.

Then, on Tuesday, we moved south to Bethel World Outreach Church in downtown Silver Spring. More on that soon!
