In just three weeks since officially kicking off, the Long Branch Soccer Academy has made great strides. All eight teams have a designated coach and assistant coach (the 4th grade has 4 dads acting as back-up coaches in the case that the others are working late and can’t get to practice on time!) and parent coordinator. Coaches are in charge of running Tuesday and Thursday practices and weekend games.
While all eight teams practice on the same field both days, Tuesday is more a time for team by team instruction and Thursday, or Academy night, is more geared toward bringing teams together to learn from one another. On Tuesdays, Armando wears his coach hat and focuses on coaching his 2nd grade team while on Thursdays he spends the two hours more firmly in his role as ”academy director” roaming from team to team giving coaches tips on instruction and motivating the kids.
In the same way, Mairelin (parent of 4th grade player and Broad Acres student Miqueas) is serving the Academy as head “coordinator of coordinators.” In the same way that Armando is giving guidance and support to the coaches–including developing a team specific training curriculum–Mairelin is working with each team coordinator to make sure as many parent as possible are involved in allowing the team to run smoothly. Mairelin and Sara are now in the process of organizing team bbqs–to take place immediately after games–where parents will get a chance to check in with each other on their kids’ progress both as a student and as a player.
Armando and Mairelin have planned to hold a corodinators and coaches meeting in a Broad Acres classroom next Wednesday evening where they’ll clarify expectations of both roles.
Despite the cold and rain, all but two games were held this past weekend. Forecasts look great for the next few days. Cross your fingers.
Feel free to join us for an evening of soccer fun any Tuesday or Thursday night at Broad Acres! Hope to see you there–bring your soccer shoes just in case!
